Smart Tech | Smart Home

Author: Darwin Sayo

I have a love-hate relationship with tech. Love it when it works and hate it when it doesn't. I share those experiences here. Currently I blog about #smarthome tech and host a #smarthomechat on twitter Tuesdays from 1pm - 2pm EST. When the tech doesn't work you can visit me on Instagram @liquidmachine and look at some nice Whiskey photographs.

Ikea Malm Recall Date Stamp

Yup, time to get rid of that recalled Ikea Malm but for the life of me I couldn’t find the date stamp.  A quick googling didn’t help either because it doesn’t really tell my what kind of stamp and there are no pictures of this stamp anywhere.  At first I was looking for a label but feared it came off.  But I found the stamp.

Alexa’s New Calling Skill

My kids usually ask Alexa first thing in the morning on how the weather is.  Living in the desert makes us excited for low temps and cloudy or rainy weather.  Anyway, first thing in the morning I check out the latest Smart Home news and found out Alexa’s new Calling skill!  So cool!  But when I checked I didn’t see the green ring on the Echo alerting me to my initial message from Amazon telling me about the new skill.  So I checked the Alexa app and found this. . .

If you don’t know what something is, ask!

Lumnkey Smart Home Key

Ran into the Lumnkey Smart Home Key on Twitter.  I think the concept is brilliant.

You have to watch their video about it on their home page.  I have to give them some brownie points making a good product video. I think it would be great for my wife and I retweeted that fact.

Kind of glad my wife isn’t on Twitter.

Sengled Element Touch Smart Light Bulb Unboxing

A quick unboxing of the Sengled Element Touch 60w smart bulb. Home automation and making your home smart isn’t going to be cheap but, fortunately, one of the easiest way you can ad some IQ to your home is with some low priced smart light bulbs.  The Sengled Element Touch bulb is about the cheapest you can get on Amazon right now.  But price fluctuates so it’s always good to get as many as you can when you can. I used to buy Cree Smart Bulbs for about $15 each but now they’re $35. Go figure.

There’s really not much to say about a smart light bulb except for this Sengled. This bulb has a button. This button allows you to be able to manually dim the bulb or turn it completely off. It also lets you reset the bulb or prepare it for pairing.  Other bulbs I’ve had to reset have made me go through a process where you have to turn the bulb off for so many seconds and then turn it back on for so many seconds and you have to do that five times. My neighbors probably think I’m crazy. So the button is actually super practical.

Some Highlights of the Sengled Elemet Touch:

  • Requires a hub. Works with Smartthings, PEQ, as well as iControl platforms like Xfinity.
  • Local on/off and dimming control via BUTTON on the bulb.
  • 9.8w
  • 800 Lumens
  • A19 Bulb
  • Heavy and squat
